Over the following couple of weeks, we will concentrate on the inquiries you should ask you’re a divorce attorney.  Ideally, these questions should take place during a consultation, or as you are making decisions about which attorney you are going to work with.  Many people find themselves in an uncomfortable place when they speak with an attorney for the first time.  This is especially true if this is your first divorce and are unfamiliar with the proceedings of family law.  It is our hope that by reading these articles, you find yourself better prepared and ready for your consultation.  If you are preparing to declare divorce, or if you have actually been served with separation paperwork, your initial impulse is probably to hire a lawyer. For a lot of plaintiffs, that search starts with an appointment or a consultation with a lawyer in their location. But finding the right attorney is not just about geographical convenience, it is about finding a law firm with a strong reputation.  Perhaps above all, it is important to find someone who you feel comfortable working with.

Choosing a divorce attorney is a very individual choice and not every lawyer benefits every client.  Below is one of the first questions you may consider asking to help the flow of your consultation.

Question 1: Do I really need to hire an attorney?

Unfortunately not every person can truly afford to hire an attorney.  It can essentially be viewed just like any other investment.  When the stakes are truly high in your divorce case, you stand the best chance to receive a positive outcome with an advocate on your side.  A good divorce attorney will be able to address your concerns and help you understand what choice is best for your situation.

A word of caution: representing yourself does not work for every person and you do not want to make mistakes that are tough to fix.  Regardless of the reasons your marriage is ending, it is always best to request a consultation or a case review.  Take the information and options they provide to heart, carefully consider your options before moving forward.
